Russula foetens  (Pers.) Pers. (1796)

Collection: New York State

The species Russulas foetens features an  odor, which is as if someone disposed of almond syrup in the sewage pipes and then tried to clean it off with bleach -- it is a combination of all three odors. It can be compared to Russula subfoetens, which is darker colored and has less spiky spores. This species does not seem to occur in California.

The distinctly spiky spores set this species apart from similar relatives.
