There is a distinct population of an
Amanita muscaria variety that appears in large numbers
in the high elevations of Sierra Nevada under Lodgepole Pine (Pinus
contorta subsp. latifolia). All collections shown here are from
the month of August between 8,000 - 10,000 feet. I never seen it below that
elevation. Superficially it resembles Amanita muscaria f. guessowii,
described from Europe and applied to some taxa in the Eastern US. Further
studies need to be conducted to define better its distribution. Complete
technical description is in the works. |
