Boletus rubripes [Thiers]

Collection: Mendocino

Locally known as the Bitter Butter Bolete -- this California native is encountered  throughout the Pacific Coast areas. It is quite distinct with its beautiful appearance and strongly bitter taste. There is a similar  species that appears in Sierra Nevada that is referred by the same name, but I would be interested to see a critical study comparing the two.
