Cortinarius armillatus  (Fr.) Fr. 1838                                                                 Collections: Scandinavia

This is one of the classic and most easily recognizable Corts. The red veil remnants on the stipe are quite distinct. It is primarily associated with birches, but members of section Armillati partner with conifers too. This section does not seem represented in California as I have never collected it.
