This is one of the classic California Telamonia. For a very long it was considered a Dermocybe. It seems to have some relationship morphologically to the European C. cinnabarinus, which is associated with broadleaved woods. The gills vary between red and orange. It could be mistaken for Cortinarius sanguineus, but the latter one has much more saturated red context and gills.
