Cortinarius distans Peck (1873)                                                                        *Collection: Calfiornia

This is the North American sister species to the European Cortinarius hinnuleus. The North American material has a distinctly scaly-furfuraceous cap, while in the European concept the cap is glabrous. Kauffman recognized both species from North America in his "NA Flora" (1932). A.H. Smith describes var. olympianus from the State of Washington, which is associated with conifers. The collections illustrated here are from Live Oak in Calfiornia. The name distans is derived by the subdistant gills.
