Cortinarius evernius  (Fr.) Fr. (1838)                                        *Collections: California and PNW

This is one of the classic Cortinarius species, which is quite distinctive with the combination of its colors -- red brownish cap with distinctly white marginal zone and pale bluish stipe with violet context. In some collections the stipe is tapering. This species is very similar to Cortinarius imbutus, but has much longer spores, which are more amygdaloid in shape. Both species have a somewhat waxy to silky appearance when dry. The degree of verrucosity of the spores tends to vary between collections. In general, the Western American collections seem to be on the smoother side.

Spores: 9-11.3x5-6.3µ amygdaloid to narrow ellipsoid
