Cortinarius infractus var. infractus (Pers, Fr)                           *Collections: Europe and PNW

Collection: Europe

This is one of the more common and easily recognizable Corts, which seems to vary a lot, yet collections from Europe and Western North America appear  to be the same species. The unquestionably bitter taste and the small, subglobose spores make it an easy target for identification. There are around of dozen of varieties varieties listed in the literature --  of them one can readily be recognized in California, mainly under broadleaved trees: var. obscurocyaneus. The species seems to span a wide ecological envelope as it is common in both broadleaved and conifer forests. Cortinarius infractus has presented interest to the Pharmacology industry for its antibiotic substances.
