This species was described very recently from Europe. Most of the collections seem to indicate Southern European distribution. This particular collection was identified and vouchered by the researchers who developed the description. The name honors the notable Danish mycologist Jan Vesterholt who amongst other things is also the current authority on Genus Hebeloma.
