Lactarius subvellereus has a hot milk and crowded gills that make it similar to  species from the similarly hot and crowded-gilled species Lactarius piperatus. It can be separated by its creamish latex which stains the gills orange-brown. In contrast, Lactarius vellereus from Europe has  a mild taste.
