Lepiota spheniscispora Vellinga (2001)                             *All collections from N. California

This species seems to be closely related to Lepiota clypeolaria from Europe and the East Coast of NA. If one is confused by the macro features then they can easily be told apart  by the shape of spores with those of spheniscispora resembling a penguin in profile. The etymology of the name was derived from that observation. There is another similar species in the area -- Lepiota magnispora Murrill, where the spores are of a similar shape, but much larger. In general spheniscispora has a paler and less shaggy appearance than magnispora

Spores resembling penguins in profile.
