This Russula seems to have a rather Cosmopolitan distribution in the Northern Hemisphere.  Primarily it is associated with Birch (Betula) in the low elevations and Fir (Abies) in the montane regions. It is one of the most common Russulas in the Sierra/Cascade range in late Summer and early Fall.
