Russula cyanoxantha  (Schaeff.) Fr. (1863)

This is one of the Cosmopolitan Russulas that "everyone should know" and learn to recognize. The distinctly variegated pileus with hues between lilac purple and pale green is quite distinct and much easier to show than describe with words. Most of the members of the Section are safe for consumption and one can't go much wrong on the mycophagy side, but the species can cause trouble to those predisposed to worry about nomenclature. That trouble may intensify when comparing to the closely related North American species like Russula variata.
