Russula nigricans is one
of the most notable species of the Genus due to its color changes. There is
a strong red reaction upon bruising, which later changes to black. There is
a similar species in Western North America
Russula dissimulans, which differs by having distinctly larger
spores, something that I personally had a chance to note when comparing. The
spore range for nigricans, as given in Sarnari's excellent
monograph would encompass dissimulans as well, but upon
examining the material one can clearly see that they fall in two different
groups based on spore size averages. |
