Russula risigallina  (Batsch) Sacc. (1915)                                                       *Califonria collections

This is a fairly common, mild Russula in the Live Oak stands of Central and Southern Calfiornia. The most abundant fruitings that I have seen where near the US - Mexican border off San Diego in January. The similarity to the European species is very significant and it would be interesting to compare molecular data to see whether they're on the same evolutionary path. The pale forms can be confused with the slightly larger Russula basifurcata.

Spores: 8-11x7-9µ  Isolated spikes & ridges.
