Russula silvicola Shaffer (1975) sensu Thiers ("Agaricales of California: Russulaceae")
This is a ubiquitous red Russula in Northern California that tends to fruit later in the season. It differs from the similarly common species Russula sanguinea by the white stipe, lacking any pinkish flushes and the gills remaining white due to the color of the spores. This species is the Northern California entry into the Section of the Emetic Russulas. Recently, molecular evidence showed conspecificity to the creamish white species: Russula cremoricolor. I have kept the listing of Russula silvicola separate in order to avoid confusion and stay consistent with the field guides. |
