This is a very common species in Europe that features an odor of almonds, sewer and bleach. It seems to be darker colored than the similar Russula foetens and the spores are distinctly less spiky. Here we are following Sarnari's breakdown of the species in the Section Foetentinae

The spores of Russula subfoetens are less spiky and show more connectives than those of Russula foetens.
