Boletus calopus var. calopus  [Persoon 1801:Fries]

Collection: Bulgaria, Pirin Mountain. Mixed forest:
Picea abies and Fagus sylvatica.
Common to the montane regions of Europe, associated mainly with broadleaved, and more rarely with conifer hosts. Said to be widely distributed in North America and the Pacific Northwest. I have not encountered B. calopus var. calopus in California. Very similar in appearance (sans the reticulations!) to the Sierra Nevada version of B. rubripes.
