Boletus subvelutipes  Peck

The group of Red Sponged and Bluing (R&B) Boletes with a non-reticulated stipe form a confusing cluster of species in North America that clearly needs more study. This is especially true for the Western species in that group, like what seems provisionally called  Boletus erythropus in California.

The cap shows very variable depigmentation.
