Lactarius        Some names are provisional pending further study                                         NSIW  = Not Seen In The West

Lactarius indigo  This is one of the most distinctive and beautiful mushrooms overall. The blue color is fully preserved in the dry material.

Lactarius subplinthogalus   The distant gills are quite distinctive NSIW

Lactarius hygrophoroides   This is one of the prettiest and easy to tell species due to its distant gills when young. Later they become rather subdistant.

Lactarius hygrophoroides      subdistant gills

Lactarius psammicola

Lactarius volemus   Looks somewhat like the European material, but not quite. Can't put my finger on it...            NSIW

Lactarius piperatus     Looks very much like the European material. The densely crowded gills  make it stand out against other acrid white Lactarii   This is the type species for the Genus, but unfortunately is not known to occur in Western NA.
These white Lactarii are somewhat different than Lactarius piperatus, but all are napalm hot -- the acridity sticks to the tongue and can't easily be chased off. There are several species in there that need work to be separated, at least for me -- I see deceptivus, subvellereus, etc.

Lactarius argillaceifolius var. argillaceifolius    In California we have a variety var. megacarpus which tends to become quite massive in size.

Lactarius sp.
