Russula
NSIW = Not Seen In The West |
Russula crustosa This is one of the classic
Russula species of the Eastern North America.
Very easy to distinguish. too. Mild taste and I suppose it is good for the
table too. Saw it in good numbers everywhere I went in the broadleaved zone.
It shows great similarity to the European
Russula virescens, but has distinctly more pinkish to purplish
hues all around. Russula virescens is listed in North America,
but I am starting to doubt whether the listed collections aren't just a
greener form of crustosa.

Russula compacta Another classic Eastern species that we
do not see in the West. Abundant under Oaks. It starts out entirely white
and turns brown with the slightest bruising. At first sight it can be
confused with Russula brevipes, but is softer overall and just
mildly acrid.

Russula sp. Mild taste. Probably pulchra, but
needs to be examined. One of the 128 red Russula in NA |
